Festivals & Events in Curaçao

From the electrifying energy of Carnival to the thunderous pagara fireworks on New Year's Eve — Curaçao celebrates with a passion that will sweep you off your feet.

Curaçao's calendar is packed with festivals that reflect its multicultural soul. African, Dutch, Latin American, and Caribbean traditions blend into celebrations that are uniquely Curaçaoan. Whether you time your visit around a major event or stumble upon a local fiesta, these celebrations offer an unforgettable window into the island's culture.

Carnival (Karnaval)

Curaçao's Carnival is the biggest event of the year — a weeks-long celebration that peaks in February or March with the Gran Marcha, a massive parade through Willemstad. The festivities begin in January with Tumba festivals (the musical competitions that produce that year's Carnival anthems), jump-ups (street parties), and children's parades. The Gran Marcha features dozens of groups with elaborate costumes, floats, and music trucks pumping Tumba, soca, and reggaeton at ear-splitting volume. The entire island participates — schools close, businesses shut down, and everyone takes to the streets. The energy is infectious, the costumes are spectacular, and the dancing doesn't stop until dawn.

💡 Tip: Book accommodation months in advance for Carnival — the island fills up completely. Wear comfortable shoes and bring earplugs for the music trucks.

Seu (Harvest Festival)

Seu is Curaçao's traditional harvest festival, rooted in African agricultural traditions brought by enslaved people. Held in March or April, after the sorghum harvest, Seu features a procession of participants carrying decorated sorghum stalks, dancing to the rhythm of traditional drums (tambú) and singing harvest songs. The festival begins at dawn with a walk from the countryside to Willemstad and culminates in celebrations at Brionplein. Seu is one of the most authentically Curaçaoan cultural events — less touristy than Carnival but deeply meaningful. The colourful costumes, rhythmic drumming, and communal spirit offer a direct connection to the island's African heritage.

💡 Tip: Seu happens on Easter Monday. Join the procession from the early morning — it's a powerful cultural experience that most tourists miss.

Dia di Rincon

Every year on April 30, the small village of Rincon — Curaçao's oldest settlement — hosts Dia di Rincon, a day-long celebration of local culture, food, and music. Rincon, tucked inland near the base of Christoffelberg, was historically the island's main village and remains a stronghold of traditional Curaçaoan culture. The festival fills the village streets with food stalls serving traditional dishes like kabritu stobá (goat stew), tutu (cornmeal with black beans), and kadushi (cactus soup). Live music, craft vendors, and cultural demonstrations run all day. It's the best single-day event to experience authentic Curaçaoan food and culture.

💡 Tip: Go hungry — the food at Dia di Rincon is the best traditional cooking you'll find anywhere on the island. Arrive early for parking.

King's Day (Dia di Rey)

As a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Curaçao celebrates King's Day on April 27 — King Willem-Alexander's birthday. Like in Amsterdam, the island turns orange with parties, flea markets (vrijmarkt), live music, and community events. The celebrations are more relaxed than their Dutch counterpart but no less fun. Many locals set up stalls selling food, drinks, and second-hand goods. Children's games and competitions are a highlight. The waterfront areas around Punda and Otrobanda host the main festivities, with stages for live music and DJs.

💡 Tip: Wear orange! The vrijmarkt is a great place to find unique second-hand bargains and try homemade local treats.

Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival

Held annually in late August or September, the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival is the island's premier music event — a sister festival to the famous North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. Over two nights at the World Trade Center Curaçao, top-tier international artists perform across multiple stages. Past headliners include Stevie Wonder, Lionel Richie, Andrea Bocelli, Alicia Keys, and Marc Anthony. The festival draws music lovers from across the Caribbean and Latin America. Ticket packages start at around $75 per night. The intimate venue means you're never far from the stage — a very different experience from the massive European original.

💡 Tip: Buy tickets early — they sell out months in advance. Combine the festival with a week-long holiday. The island vibe during festival week is electric.

New Year's Eve & Pagara

New Year's Eve in Curaçao is an explosion — literally. The island celebrates with pagara: enormous strings of firecrackers that can stretch for hundreds of metres. Businesses, families, and communities compete to create the longest and loudest pagara. At midnight, the entire island erupts in a thunderous chain reaction of fireworks and pagaras that lasts for over an hour. The noise is staggering — car alarms go off for miles, and the air fills with a thick haze of smoke. It's chaotic, exhilarating, and unlike anything else in the Caribbean. The celebrations continue with parties across the island, from beach clubs to private garden gatherings.

💡 Tip: The smoke can be intense — people with asthma should stay indoors after midnight. The best viewing spots are elevated areas overlooking Willemstad.
