Carnival (Karnaval)
Curaçao's Carnival is the biggest event of the year — a weeks-long celebration that peaks in February or March with the Gran Marcha, a massive parade through Willemstad. The festivities begin in January with Tumba festivals (the musical competitions that produce that year's Carnival anthems), jump-ups (street parties), and children's parades. The Gran Marcha features dozens of groups with elaborate costumes, floats, and music trucks pumping Tumba, soca, and reggaeton at ear-splitting volume. The entire island participates — schools close, businesses shut down, and everyone takes to the streets. The energy is infectious, the costumes are spectacular, and the dancing doesn't stop until dawn.
💡 Tip: Book accommodation months in advance for Carnival — the island fills up completely. Wear comfortable shoes and bring earplugs for the music trucks.
