Neighbourhoods of Curaçao

Each neighbourhood in Willemstad has its own personality — from pastel-painted UNESCO streets to bohemian nightlife districts and quiet local barrios.

Willemstad is a city of distinct neighbourhoods, each with its own character and charm. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, but the real magic lies in exploring beyond the postcard views. Here's your guide to the areas that make Curaçao's capital one of the most fascinating small cities in the Caribbean.

Pietermaai

Pietermaai

Once a run-down residential area, Pietermaai has been transformed into Curaçao's coolest neighbourhood. Crumbling colonial mansions have been converted into boutique hotels, craft cocktail bars, and restaurants with fairy-light-draped courtyards. The street runs along the waterfront from the centre of Willemstad east towards the Sea Aquarium, and every block has a different vibe — from the live-music bars around Scuba Lodge to the quiet yoga studios and art galleries further along. On weekend nights, the strip comes alive with locals and visitors bar-hopping between venues like Miles Jazz Café, Mundo Bizarro, and Netto Bar. Despite the gentrification, Pietermaai retains an authentically Curaçaoan feel — roosters still wander the streets at dawn.

💡 Tip: Stay in Pietermaai if you want nightlife on your doorstep. The boutique hotels here (Scuba Lodge, The Ritz Village) are among the island's most atmospheric.

Punda

Punda

The eastern half of Willemstad's historic centre, Punda is what most visitors picture when they think of Curaçao: rows of pastel-coloured Dutch colonial buildings lining the Handelskade waterfront, reflected in the still waters of Sint Annabaai. The district is compact and walkable, packed with shops, restaurants, and the Floating Market where Venezuelan vendors sell fruits and vegetables from their boats. Fort Amsterdam anchors the neighbourhood, and the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue — the oldest continuously used synagogue in the Americas (1732) — is a short walk away. Thursday evening brings 'Punda Vibes', a street party with food stalls, live music, and a carnival atmosphere.

💡 Tip: Visit during Punda Vibes on Thursday evenings for the best atmosphere. The Handelskade is most photogenic in the golden hour before sunset.

Otrobanda

Otrobanda

Literally meaning 'the other side', Otrobanda sits across the harbour from Punda, connected by the iconic Queen Emma pontoon bridge. It's the grittier, more authentic counterpart to polished Punda — a neighbourhood of narrow streets, street art, local barber shops, and some of Curaçao's best kept culinary secrets. The Rif Fort, a 19th-century fortification at the harbour entrance, has been converted into a small mall with restaurants and shops. The Kura Hulanda Museum is here, as is the cruise terminal. Otrobanda is where you feel the real pulse of Willemstad — less curated, more alive.

💡 Tip: Walk through Breedestraat for local shops and street food. The murals and street art around Otrobanda are worth exploring with a camera.

Jan Thiel

About 15 minutes east of Willemstad, Jan Thiel is Curaçao's upscale resort area. The bay has a well-organised beach with loungers, water sports, and beach bars, while the surrounding area features luxury villas, condo complexes, and some of the island's best restaurants. It's quieter and more polished than central Willemstad, making it popular with families and couples looking for a resort-style holiday with good infrastructure. The nearby salt flats attract flamingos, and the coastal walking path towards Caracasbaai offers beautiful sunset views.

💡 Tip: Rent a villa in Jan Thiel if you're travelling with family — the area has supermarkets, pharmacies, and everything you need without driving to town.

Scharloo

Scharloo

Just behind Punda, Scharloo was once the wealthiest neighbourhood in Willemstad — home to Jewish merchants and plantation owners who built ornate mansions in a mix of Dutch colonial and tropical styles. After decades of decline, Scharloo is slowly being restored, and the contrast between crumbling facades and freshly painted restorations makes for compelling exploring. The neighbourhood is home to the Curaçao Maritime Museum and several art galleries. The architecture here is arguably the most impressive on the island — grand staircases, elaborate cornices, and shaded inner courtyards that hint at former glory.

💡 Tip: Walk along Scharlooweg to see the grandest mansions. The neighbourhood is quiet and authentic — bring a camera for the architecture.

Banda Abou (West Side)

Banda Abou (West Side)

Banda Abou refers to the entire western half of the island — a world away from the bustle of Willemstad. This is rural Curaçao: cacti-studded hillsides, old plantation houses (landhuizen), tiny fishing villages like Westpunt and Lagun, and the island's most beautiful beaches. The pace of life here is slower, the landscape more dramatic, and the people more traditional. Westpunt, at the island's northwestern tip, is a sleepy village with colourful houses, a small fishing harbour, and the famous Playa Forti cliff. If you want to understand what Curaçao looked like before tourism, spend a day driving through Banda Abou.

💡 Tip: Fill your tank before heading west — petrol stations are scarce past Sint Willibrordus. Bring cash for beach entrance fees.
