Frequently asked questions
How long is the Klein Curaçao Expedition and what time does it start?+
Eight hours total — departure 07:00 from Caracasbaai, return around 15:00. The boat journey is roughly 1.5 hours each way (25 km southeast across open water), leaving about 4.5 hours on the island for beach time, snorkeling, lighthouse visit, and lunch. Earlier start means calmer morning seas and a return before the afternoon trade winds peak.
How rough is the boat trip to Klein Curaçao — will I get seasick?+
The crossing covers open water between Curaçao and Klein Curaçao, so it's bumpier than the leeward-coast tours. The Rupert 50's heavy hull and planing speed handle it better than most operators' lighter boats — you ride over the chop, not through it — but the 1.5-hour crossing is real ocean. If you're prone to seasickness, take a non-drowsy tablet (e.g. Dramamine Less Drowsy) 30 minutes before departure and sit mid-boat for stability. Most guests report no issues; fewer than 5% need medication.
What's actually on Klein Curaçao — facilities, beach, lighthouse?+
Uninhabited island, 1.7 km², no permanent residents. The west beach is white sand with shallow turquoise water and shaded palapas. The 1850 cast-iron lighthouse and the ruins of the keeper's house are at the south-east tip — 15-minute walk from the beach. Several day-tripper operators have basic palapa shelters with toilets; we use the Seafari shaded area with our own provisions. Snorkeling reef starts 20 m offshore.
Will I see sea turtles on the Klein Curaçao Expedition, and where?+
Often, but not guaranteed. Klein Curaçao is a known nesting site for green, hawksbill, and loggerhead turtles, and the Ramsar wetland status has protected the population since 2018. Sightings happen in the shallow seagrass beds south of the lighthouse and along the reef edge 50 m offshore. For a near-guaranteed turtle sighting, the Half Day or Full Coast Sea Safari includes a stop at Playa Piskadó where turtles feed daily.
Is the Klein Curaçao Expedition suitable for kids, seniors, or non-swimmers?+
Yes for fit kids 8+, fit seniors, and non-swimmers, with caveats. The 1.5-hour crossing can be bumpy; smaller children (under 6) and guests prone to seasickness usually do better on the leeward-coast tours. Non-swimmers stay on shore at Klein Curaçao — there's plenty of shaded beach time and a shallow swim line. Seniors with limited mobility should expect a wet boat-to-shore landing (no dock at Klein Curaçao); mention concerns at booking and we'll help.
What food is served on the Klein Curaçao Expedition, and can dietary restrictions be accommodated?+
Light Caribbean breakfast on the morning crossing (fresh fruit, croissants, yogurt) and a full Caribbean lunch on the island (BBQ chicken or fish, salads, rice, tropical fruit). Drinks all day: water, soft drinks, local Curaçao beer (Montana Blond, Amstel Bright), wine, hard seltzers, signature Seafari cocktail. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and major allergies (nuts, shellfish) accommodated with 48 hours notice at booking. Skip the heavy breakfast at your hotel.
What should I bring on the Klein Curaçao Expedition?+
Reef-safe sunscreen (mineral-based, not oxybenzone), a hat, sunglasses with strap, swimwear, a light cover-up for the breezy crossing, and water shoes or aquasocks (the boat-to-shore landing is on a sandy bottom but watch for the occasional sea urchin). Towels are provided. Snorkel gear is on board. Skip cash — there are no shops or vendors on Klein Curaçao. Bring your phone in a dry bag if you want photos.
How does Seafari's Klein Curaçao Expedition compare to other day-trip operators?+
Two practical differences. (1) Crossing time: the Rupert 50 reaches Klein Curaçao in 1.5 hours; sailing catamarans typically take 2–2.5 hours, leaving less time on the island. (2) On-island setup: most operators run shared palapa areas; we have our own dedicated Seafari shaded area with the bar and food on site. Pricing is comparable across operators (USD 100–200 range); the choice is mostly about how much island-time and what crowd density you prefer.
What's the cancellation and weather policy for Klein Curaçao?+
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure — full refund. Within 24 hours: 50% refund. Klein Curaçao's open-water crossing makes it more weather-sensitive than the leeward tours: if wind is forecast above 25 knots or sea state above 2.5 m, we cancel for safety with a 100% refund or free reschedule. You'll get a phone call by 06:00 on the morning of the tour. October-November sees the most weather-driven cancellations; December-September is consistently runnable.
Where does the Klein Curaçao Expedition depart from, and what's the parking situation?+
Caracasbaai marina, free on-site parking, 20 minutes from central Willemstad and 25 minutes from Mega Pier. The early 07:00 departure means traffic is light. Hotel pickup is available as a USD 15 add-on for Mambo, Jan Thiel, and Pietermaai zones. Arrive by 06:45 for check-in, safety briefing, and a quick coffee before boarding. Cruise passengers can book Klein Curaçao only on overnight or late-departure (post-17:00) Curaçao stops because of the 8-hour duration.
